Accessories are the secret to transforming ordinary rooms into extraordinary spaces. They have the power to change how a room feels, giving it character, style, and a unique touch. So, if you're truly looking to elevate your space, putting time and thought into them is key. After all, just as in life, details matter in interiors. Here are my 7 expert tips to elevate your space using accessories:
Create layers with accessories to make your spaces interesting
If you’ve been afraid of mixing and matching different sizes, shapes, colors and textures in your accessories, it’s time to put that fear to rest. The truth is that by mixing, you create layers in your space, adding depth, interest and visual flow. You can also play with different heights, like a collection of vases, and levels, like stacking boxes, or placing stacks of books from highest to lowest for a stair step effect, to create a more visually appealing arrangement.
A great and easy way to create layers is using throw pillows. Check out our blog "Pillow Perfection" and become a master throw pillow picker.
Make the most out of your bookshelves
The days of bookshelves being just for books are long gone. Bookshelves create a great focal point for you to group your accessories and create collections of pretty objects. To make it fun, you can include framed pieces of art, boxes, books, vases, and sculptures. And for those book fans out there, you can still include books!
Use accessories to create focal points
A focal point is key in your space for balance and to draw your eye to ‘the thing’ you want to highlight in your room. Accessories are a great way to help draw attention to specific areas in a room, or your focal point. Find that one item or accessory that speaks to you, whether it's a striking painting, a statement mirror, or a fabulous rug. Once you find it, build around it to create your room’s focal point. Think about the other accessories as supporting actors that elevate the star of the show!
Add different kinds of lighting to set the vibe of your room
You're probably wondering: "Why should I add more lights if I already have ceiling lights?"... Well, those lights aren't usually enough to make your space functional or beautiful. Investing in good and different kinds of lighting is key when creating a scheme for a space.
A chandelier, for example, sets the vibe of your room and pulls your eye up.
Floor and table lamps anchor a seating area and provide task lighting to your space at your eye’s level, making it more functional for when you’re using the space.
Sconce lighting highlights accessories on your wall, like architectural features, mirrors, artwork, and adds interest with shadows and light.
When you include more than just one type of lighting in a room, they not only illuminate the space to seem lighter and brighter but they add multiple focal points. This keeps your eye moving around the space so it feels much bigger than it is.
Make your space brighter and bigger using mirrors
This is one of my favorite unknown hacks - Positioning a mirror on a wall facing a window maximizes the influx of natural light. This not only brightens the room, but also creates an illusion of spaciousness! Want to spice it up? Mirrors come in all shapes and sizes. Choose a mirror with a unique decorative frame, keep it modern with a simple black framed mirror, or go bold with an odd-shaped mirror.
Use accessories to gain storage space
Have you ever been in a pretty space where you can’t find anything you need in there? I have been and I hate it. I think spaces not only need to be beautiful but also functional, and storage plays a key role in this! You can gain storage space and keep your room looking stylish by adding baskets or boxes that match your room's aesthetic. This functional tip will keep your space organized while keeping everything you need at hand. Here are some of my favorite storage baskets that come in 4 different colors and tons of sizes!
Bring the outdoors in using plants
Bringing the outdoors into your indoor spaces using plants and flowers is an easy way to balance your rooms. Plants also warm up your space and create a more peaceful environment. One thing to remember is that environmental factors like light, air, and temperature affect your plants. So before buying and placing them in your space, it’s important to do some research and make sure they’ll have what they need to stay beautiful.
