Storage. It’s the thing that we all need more of, right?! If you’re thinking that the only way to handle your clutter is by adding more space, it’s time to think again! After years of working with clients to transform their spaces into something that’s both beautiful and functional, I’ve come up with some of my favorite and most creative ways to solve storage problems.
The Key to Storage is Proper Planning
The first step before jumping into any project is planning! Start by asking yourself: “What things in this room do I use on a regular basis?” This helps you prioritize how accessible those things need to be. It’s like putting your Waterford Crystal glassware on the top shelf of your cabinets vs your daily glassware on one you can easily reach. The same goes for other things in your space. Once you’ve defined your storage goals, the fun can begin!
Creative Storage Solutions for Your Space
There are a lot of ways to add storage to your space besides more baskets or cabinets, although those tried-and-true solutions shouldn’t be forgotten! My Insider Tip: When it comes to decorating and organizing your space, what you can’t see is just as important as what you can see. By using some of these unexpected alternatives, you will create function behind closed doors and declutter your space to create a more calming environment in your home.
Two-in-One Furniture
When a piece of furniture is not only beautiful but practical, it does something for your soul! So when you find that perfect combination of a cool piece of furniture WITH storage, whether it’s expected or unexpected, grab it! If you start looking for these beautiful combination pieces, you will find that the options are endless. Some common ones are storage ottomans, tables with drawers and a beautiful buffet cabinet. But have you thought about a table that doubles as a bed for your furry child, or a banquette that has storage drawers underneath? How great would it be to store your extra dishes under your breakfast nook?!
Adding Square Feet with Shelves
Let’s talk about one storage solution that’s been used since the beginning of time: Shelves! Their best quality is how versatile they are. We now have built-in shelves, freestanding shelves, hidden shelves inside of cabinets, and my personal favorite, floating shelves. Shelves are a great storage solution because instead of needing more square footage of floor space, you are using your walls to expand your storage capabilities. By going vertical, your space feels bigger, your floors stay cleaner, and you create some eye level focal points for you to decorate!
Shelving comes in all shapes and sizes, and there is an art to utilizing them in a way that’s beautiful and functional. Play with mixing and layering art, framed photos, vases, books, baskets and even small plants to create something that’s interesting and practical. Have you ever considered using open shelving to divide your space into zones? This is a great way to create more intimate space in an open-concept living room, while adding more practical storage.

Rolling into That Cart Life
You’ve probably thought to use a rolling cart to display your bar supplies, but have you considered other alternatives? Carts are super flexible, mobile, and add a touch of style! They are great for a drop zone, a bathroom, and even a media space where you want to display snacks! All shapes and sizes and materials are welcomed here, from metal to wood to acrylic, carts are a great storage solution.
Open the (Closet) Door to New Possibilities
Have you ever thought about using the space behind your closet (or cabinet) doors for storage? I know it might sound a little cringe worthy, but when done the right way, it will double your space and add so much flexibility to your storage game! You can install shelves, racks, or hooks depending on the items you need to store there.
Do you have a different pair of sunglasses for every outfit? If so, this sunglass shelving, featured by Elle Decor, is geniusly built onto the back of the closet door! Or if shoes are your thing, this is a great shoe rack that doesn’t feel like a college dorm room solution. Whether a DIY solution or a custom closet solution is right for you, you cannot go wrong when adding more storage to your closet!
Under-the-Stairs Storage
Are you familiar with the trend “Nobody’s gonna know!”? Under-the-stairs storage solutions are perfect for hiding things so no one sees them. Or you can always go bold and make a statement storage area, like this wine space, under the stairs! Making the most of every space in your home, even the stairs, is the perfect solution to add creative storage to your home. Having the space concealed by a door or a cleverly designed sliding panel is an option to keep your personal things hidden and allows you to have a clutter-free environment.
Baskets, Baskets, and More Baskets
The staple in every home - Baskets! You have the freedom to move them around as needed. They are great for grouping similar items together. They are particularly useful for containing smaller items that might otherwise get lost like toys or office supplies. And they even allow you to label the contents of each basket for maximum organization!
There’s a Cabinet Behind Where?
The magic of Interior Design happens when beauty meets functionality, and that's exactly what this smart solution achieves. By adding hinges to the frame of a piece of art or a pretty mirror, you can create a hidden storage solution. Storage and beauty at the same time, sounds like a win to me!
It’s Time for Your Storage Solutions!
As you start to organize your space and add storage solutions, remember that creativity knows no bounds and you don't have to choose between something functional and something beautiful. When you put on your creativity hat, you can have both. So, go ahead and redefine your storage solutions!
